Crusader Comment – Andrew Martinez

Andrew Martinez, Mater Dei Catholic High

Four years ago, an adolescent boy geared up for a football game. He threw 3 touchdown passes in the opening round of the Saints Alumni-Parochial Varsity Football Championship tourney and sealed his team, St. Rose of Lima, a spot in the tournament’s semi-finals. This athlete was none other than Andrew Martinez,

who despite suffering a broken finger, continued to play, and determined to lead his team to victory. He waited until after all games in order to be rushed to the hospital, and his success earned him a spot on the All-County team. This grammar school highlight can be used to sum up his past 4 years as a Mater Dei Crusader. In 2010, he was selected All-Metro Mesa 1st Team Defense in football.

With a reputation as one of the toughest players on the field, Martinez works day in and day out to lead his team to victory. A captain on the practice field, Martinez encourages his fellow players with chants and cheers in order to raise the tempo of practice. Andrew is used as a type of utility player on the team. He starts at Middle Linebacker, but has been seen playing TE on the opposite side of the ball, as well as making bone-shattering hits as a punt coverage specialist and special teams player. These feats have earned Martinez looks from colleges including Boise State, UNLV, New Mexico State as well as others where he wishes to play not one, but two varsity sports.

One sport is not enough for Martinez. Andrew prides himself on being an athlete, one who can excel in several different sports. A standout 1st baseman in baseball, Martinez was offered a scholarship to San Diego State based on his skills early in his sophomore year. He has verbally committed to State although he says his options are open and he hopes to find a school where he does not have to be limited to a single sport. Stories are frequently told about his baseball exploits including his infamous home-run swing, which strikes fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers. This swing has earned Andrew a spot on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays scout team where he continues to play 1st base.

As if football and baseball were not enough, Martinez has also been known to play basketball. At St. Rose of Lima in 6th grade, Andrew made the Parochial JV All-County Basketball team at the Saints Alumni Basketball Championships. He holds this as one of his highest accomplishments of his middle school career and notes that his team ended up winning the tournament.

When asked about his free time, Martinez quickly pointed out that balancing school and sports leave him few idle moments. When he does have a free moment, Andrew likes to help out his church, St. Rose of Lima.
