September 2012 Athletes of the Month

Below are the Athletes of the Month for September as selected by their coaches.  Congratulations to these young Crusaders.


Boys Cross Country – Joseph Chiappe, 9th ,
Though new to the sport, Joseph dedicated himself early on through summer conditioning and his summer training is paying off early, as he has medaled in every invitational he has raced in the month of September. Joseph has qualified for the Southern California Cross Country Invitational at Guajome Regional Park where he will compete against the top 250 varsity runners in all of southern California.




Girls Cross Country – Miranda Campos, 10th ,
Miranda has already distinguished herself as one of Mater Dei’s top two runners in the Girls’ Varsity Division. Her hard work in the spring and throughout the summer months has catapulted her towards the top of Mater Dei’s Cross Country team where she is a returning varsity member.




Football (Offense) – Joseph LeGerrette-Luke, 12th
Joe has led the Crusader offense to a 2-2 start. He has been electric both throwing and running the football. He leads the offense and is one of the leaders of the team.





Football (Defense) – Sebastian Alzua, 12th
Sebastian has led the Crusader defense in tackles through the first half of the season. He not only has dominated at the linebacker position, but he is a huge leader on and off the field.






Girls Golf – Jessica Mangrobang, 9th
Jessica has made her name known throughout the Mesa League by medaling in her first 8 golf matches.  She has set the standard in the south bay for lady’s golf.  She was also named the Union Tribune Athlete of the Week.





Girls Tennis – Lynn San Ramon, 12th
Lynn is the Team Captain and leads by example. She has won all 9 of her matches easily in the 3 league games we have played this season to date. Lynn has moved into the role as the queen of doubles and this has made a significant difference in our ability to win matches and games.






Girls Volleyball – Vianca De La Parra, 12th
This year as a senior and middle hitter, Vianca has stepped up her game to becoming one of the primary threats on the team. Her leadership shows through her hard work and dedication to the team on and off court.


Boys’ Water Polo – Alec Figy, 12th
Alec is a four time letter winner and team co- captain and has lead the aqua crusaders to a fast start. Alec is averaging 3.5 goals a game and is closing in on the all time scoring record at Mater Dei. Alec plays the driver position and has tremendous speed in the water.




Cheer – Alyssa Carranza, 10th
Alyssa is a superior athlete and a great asset to the varsity cheer squad. She exemplifies great leadership skills and isn’t shy to show her Crusader Spirit.

Point Loma senior Ricky Sweet finished first in the South Bay Invitational at Rohr Park.

Golf | Mater Dei Catholic

The freshman ran her streak of medal rounds to seven in Metro Mesa League competition, against Hilltop at Eastlake CC and Bonita Vista at Chula Vista GC. Mangrobang’s low round is a 4-under 32 at Bonita GC against Olympian.
